Raquel Hernández Givens, PhD is not only distinguished in the fields of medical education and accreditation but also fiercely passionate about the complexities of academic labor, particularly its intersection with race and gender. A proud graduate of the University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University, her commitment to understanding emotional labor has led her to groundbreaking research, focusing on women of color professionals in medical schools. Dr. Givens’ work sheds light on the often-overlooked struggles and nuances of their roles, bridging gaps in academic discourse and creating a foundation for more inclusive practices in higher education.

Beginning her journey at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson in 2002, Dr. Givens has been instrumental in various capacities, from curriculum design to overseeing successful accreditation visits. She currently serves as the Associate Dean for Curricular Affairs and Director for Accreditation for the MD program and Assistant Professor, Educator Scholar in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Yet, another passion emerged in her research interests in academic labor. In 2017, she made a splash by co-founding a national professional community, uniting accreditation professionals from 146 U.S. allopathic schools, further bolstering collaborative efforts to understand and make visible emerging accreditation professionals in medical schools. Outside the academic realm, Dr. Givens treasures her family time enjoying road trips with her husband and actively supporting her children’s endeavors. She is avid podcast and audiobook listener and TikTok enthusiast.
